SUMMARY:Headland | Sean Molloy at the Molesworth Gallery
DESCRIPTION:\nOver the past 15 years\, Sean Molloy has investigated and dec
onstructed the baroque painting canon. Initially\, this took the form of p
ortraiture\, primarily via the unsettling representation of Philip IV by V
elazquez\, later leading to exploration of the baroque landscape canon\, i
n particular the works of Berchem\, Ruisdael\, Cuyp and Wouwerman. From 20
14\, he focussed on creating capricci\, imagined landscapes composited fro
m references in the baroque canon\, occasionally including staffage and ov
erlain with disruptive\, superimposed and highly-saturated ‘glitch’ el
 ements.\n
