Would better design help solve social injustice in our towns and cities? This question, and others, will be explored and discussed with international architecture expert Toni L. Griffin at a virtual event organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation next month.

Toni L. Griffin is the founder of urbanAC, a New York-based planning and design management practice that works with public, private and non-profit organisations to reimagine, reshape and rebuild just cities and communities. Over the past ten years, her practice has worked with several major U.S cities on the cusp of economic recovery including Chicago, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Detroit.

Ms. Griffin is also the founder and director of Harvard’s Just City Lab, which investigates the way design can have a positive impact on addressing the conditions of injustice in cities.

Ms. Griffin will be speaking at a virtual event at 6pm on Thursday, 11th February. The discussion will take place as part of the IAF’s New Now Next series of virtual talks featuring leading international architecture and design experts, and forms part of the IAF’s 15th anniversary programme of events.

Participating in the discussion will be Michelle Wilkinson, a curator at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African American History and Culture, where she is expanding the museum’s collections in architecture and design.

Speaking ahead of the event, Nathalie Weadick, Director of the IAF, said: “Next month’s discussion will be a valuable and pertinent event for anyone with an interest in making their city more liveable and equal. The event will be the last event in our current New Now Next series, and we are looking forward to hearing from one of the world’s leading urban designers, and how we can apply her practices to our own environments.”

Details of the 2021 New Now Next programme are due to be announced in the coming months. The New Now Next series is curated by the Irish Architecture Foundation and sponsored by Arup.

The event is free, but pre-booking is required. Further information can be found here.
