The Model presents Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, Waiting for the Barbarians, 2013, a film made in response to the poem “Waiting for the Barbarians” by Constantine P Cavafy (1863–1933).

Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, winners of the 2017 Marcel Duchamp Prize, one of the most prestigious contemporary art awards, were born in Beirut and currently live and work between France and Lebanon. Both artists share with Cavafy the Middle East as a place of residence in a period of significant turmoil and disorder. Taking the poem “Waiting for the Barbarians“, the artists explore panoramic images of Beirut, shifting from mobile to immobile, and from the general to finely excavated detail. The photography becomes strangely and surprisingly animated as we watch, creating a sense of tension between time, space and movement.

The exhibition is the first in a series of Plug-In exhibitions, presented as part of the associated programme alongside the exhibition Turbulence.
The Plug-In programme continues with exhibitions by Peter Wachtler (22 February – 24 March) and Martin Creed (31 March – 4 May).
