IN CAHOOTS WITH THE EARTH | GROUP SHOW

2ND – 18TH DEC 2021 | A4 SOUNDS GALLERY & BROADCAST

It’s hard. Hard to know what to do, or how to do it. Information is everywhere, but you don’t have time to read or think. Wrecked. Who do you ask? Who do you listen to? It’s overwhelming, relentless, unreal.

BUT

There are forces working IN CAHOOTS WITH THE EARTH.

Join Them.

IN CAHOOTS WITH THE EARTH is a group show of members from A4 Sounds, Dublin, Engage Art Studios, Galway and Sample-Studios, Cork. Together these 18 artworks and artefacts from our wider programme offer modes to disrupt and challenge the present; tools for collective reflection and imagining; or propose alternatives for the future.

We invite you to join us both online and offline to conspire with the earth.

Installation Specific Information:

Power Relations | Performative Action
Throughout this exhibition expect sporadic power outages in the gallery. When we lose power all works will turn off, all lights will turn off and you will be in darkness. The outages will be at random times and for unknown durations. If you do not want to experience this part of the exhibition you can opt out when booking.

The gallery is well lit and the exhibition space can be easily navigated.
There is a 1m wide distance to move throughout the gallery.
The exhibition is broken into five areas. These areas are seperated by textile hangings or furniture which is laid out to visually divide the areas.

Sculptures
Throughout the space there are a number of porcelin sculptures which appear to be precariously hung and balancing on wire frames. They have been secured to the ground, although if banged or touched the porcelin can break. There is a 1m wide walkway throughout the gallery to view these scultpures.

There is a rug covered in plastic on the floor. This rug also has some rubble close to the wall. You may walk across the rug to sit on the sofa or to view the work on the wall.

Seating Areas to Engage with Artworks
There is a sofa and five chairs in different areas of the gallery that you can sit on.

1. Living Room Area: You may sit on the sofa to view the artworks in this area. This is a two seater fabric couch. There is padding in the back and seat of the couch.

2. Kitchen Area:
You may sit at on the two chairs at the kitchen table to watch the video piece on the table and enjoy snacks which you received on arrival. These are wooden chairs with cushions

3. Conference Room Area:
You may sit on the three white chairs in the conference room area to watch the video work. These are canteen chairs. Cushions are available at the front desk if needed.

Video & Sound Works
In four of the spaces video pieces will be played with sound.
There are five video pieces with audio in total. They are played one at a time on a loop. When a video piece is playing all other screens will be off.
While in the gallery space, the video pieces will come on in a clockwise direction when the one before it is finished.
When a piece comes on, it may be a little bit disorientating as the sound moves to a different speaker in a different area of the room.

Order of works
1. Living Room Area. A video will be played on the T.V with its audio piece will be heard on a speaker next to it. The audio is a soft voice speaking in english.

2. Kitchen Area. A video piece will be played on the small T.V on the table with its audio coming from a speaker below the table. The audio is a conversation between two people in Italian and some snippets of music. There will be a break in the conversation for a song.

3. Bedroom Area: The Bed. A video piece will be played on a monitor in the bedframe with its audio being heard from a speaker at the top of the bed. This audio contains clock ticking sounds and sounds of water.

4. Bedroom Area. The Desk. A video will play on a computer monitor on the desk with the audio coming from a speaker behind the monitor. This audio contains quiet sounds for the first half. The second half is a karaoke song. The microphone will be activated during this piece. You may sing along into the microphone if you wish.

5. Conference Room Area. A video piece will be projected onto the grey rectangle on the board hung from the ceiling. The audio piece will be heard from a speaker on the floor behind the cardboard cut out. This audio is a satrical advertisement for a course you can sign up to. It also contains music and towards the end some chanting.
