In 2006 Kate spent half a year in Australia, on a house swap with people in Melbourne. She was at the top of her game as a writer for young adults at that time, having just won the Whitbread Children’s Book Award, but over the following years she became increasingly interested, – obsessed in fact – by Aboriginal art and culture, to the extent that it changed the trajectory of her life. In 2009, assisted by an Arts Council Travel and Training Award, she returned to Australia for another prolonged spell, and made a trip into the central desert region in a rented 4×4. She was researching a book, but in the end it took a further ten years of travel and research before the book could be finished and published. During that time Kate made several more trips to the central desert and was fortunate enough to be able to spend time in a Warlpiri community and make trips to significant sites in the region with friends she made there. Also during these years, she gathered a collection of artworks, acrylics and watercolours, by Warlpiri, Pintupi and Arrernte artists. She would propose to show a selection of the best of these in Kinvara. Map
