MTU CCAD Gallery

An exhibition entitled MEND takes place at the MTU CCAD Gallery, Grand Parade, Cork from 4-28 March 2022. It features work by students from MTU Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork and the Kaunas Faculty of Vilnius Academy of Arts, Lithuania who are taking part in a student exchange project examining the physical mending and restoration of materials, particularly of cloth and paper, to express aspects of healing. As our world moves through and out of a global pandemic, this project explores many issues of repair, both personal and social, that seem particularly relevant and inspiring.

Spanning the 2021-22 Academic Year, students in both institutions have physically exchanged torn or worn fragments for repair and written narratives. This material, as well as the finished artworks, will feature in the exhibition at the MTU CCAD Gallery, Cork before travelling to Kaunas later in the year where it will be shown as part of Kaunas’s designation as European City of Culture.

The MEND project is directed by lecturers Pamela Hardesty and Kate O’Kelly of Cork’s BA in Contemporary Applied Art and by Monika Žaltauskaitė Grašienė and Giedrė Kriaučionyte, textiles staff in the Kaunas Faculty of Vilnius Academy of Arts and is run in conjunction with the MAKE 2022 symposium, which has as its theme Art and Healing.
