About Oikeiôsis (a sense of belonging)
The theory of Oikeiôsis, from Ancient Greece, was developed to explain how the advent of reason fundamentally transforms the outward orientation of human beings as they mature. The word suggests the recognition of coming into one’s own, of belonging to oneself but also the desire for affinity and affiliation, for ‘being at home (oikos)’ in one’s body and wider environment.
Ideas around what it means to be ‘at home’ as a member of a family, or part of a social group or sub-culture, as a citizen among the citizenry or an individual in a global community – these are some of the concepts driving the different projects in this year’s exhibition which are manifested in the various photographic installations and photobooks on display.
