SUMMARY:On the Edge and In-Between | James Hayes at Siamsa Tíre
DESCRIPTION:\nExhibition continues fro 04/07/2026.\n\n\n\nOil painting exhi
bition reflecting Hayes' six months living and working&nbsp\;as a Great Bl
asket Island caretaker.&nbsp\;Bringing his longstanding exploration of&nbs
p\;self&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;surroundings&nbsp\;to this unique setting\, he cap
tures the world he encountered\, its modern cast of characters\, and its c
ontemporary way of life.&nbsp\;The&nbsp\;paintings examine&nbsp\;the dynam
ic relationship between past and present\, exploring the inherent nature o
f ‘islandness’ and the distinctly liminal sense of place. His re-prese
ntations of the island are painted with honesty and sincerity. Suspending
 some&nbsp\;of the&nbsp\;persistent preconceptions about islands\, he chall
 enges and re-contextualises them\, creating a more nuanced picture.\n\n\n\
nSiamsa Tíre invites you to the opening reception on Saturday 4 July&nbsp
 \;at 5:30pm - free entry\, all welcome.&nbsp\;\n\n\n\nJames Hayes is&nbsp\
;a visual artist from county Kerry. He primarily operates as an oil-painte
r\, but is also an accomplished muralist\, illustrator and a qualified arc
hitect. His artistic practice is centred around a personal and phenomenolo
gical exploration of the complex relationship that exists between&nbsp\;se
lf&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;surroundings. His work has been characterised as a uniq
ue blended form of contemporary engagement with both the genre of ‘lands
cape’ painting and an intimate narrative painting tradition\; eschewing
hierarchy and category in favour of equal focus on both landscapes and fig
ures. He is a self-styled painter of the space between people_and_place.\n
