Event Type

To coincide with The Artist’s Mother the latest project in a series of responses as part of the IMMA Collection: Freud Project 2016-2021, we are delighted to present a live streamed conversation with special guests; international acclaimed artist Chantal Joffe and curator, art historian, writer, and broadcaster Katy Hessel, well known for the podcast series ‘The Great Women Artists’.

Moderated by IMMA’s Head of Collections Christina Kennedy, our guests discuss the theme of ‘the artist’s mother’, as well as contemporary discussions on motherhood, as it relates to Chantal Joffe’s latest painting series of her mother Daryll. Through this lens the conversation delves deeper into Joffe’s studio processes and creative environment, in which to reflect on the artist’s ongoing engagement with the Freud Project at IMMA.

As we take you on a virtual walk-through of selected works comprising The Artist’s Mother, we discover Joffe’s distinctive approach in dealing with complex narratives of connection, perception and representation, implicit in the relationship between artist, subject and viewer.
