SUMMARY:Routes and Realms – al-Masālik wa al-Mamālik | Diaa Lagan at Ch
 ester Beatty
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n \nExhibition continues 16th May 2025 - 7th September
 2025.\nThis exhibition centres upon a thirteenth-century manuscript copy o
f al-Iṣṭakhrī’s book from the Chester Beatty’s Arabic Collection
and a commissioned response by contemporary artist Diaa Lagan.\nMeticulous
 ly-labelled\, al-Iṣṭakhrī’s full-page maps apply pre-modern techniq
ues of exaggerated scale and schematic distortion to deliver both geograph
ical data and an undeniably visual spectacle. These beautiful maps present
a poignant visualisation of the world we know today.\nDiaa Lagan is an ar
tist based in Dublin. Typically layered in multiple viewpoints and referen
ces\, Lagan’s powerful work deals with multiple perspectives on the cons
cious human sense of place\, both local and global\, and on our enduring r
elational connectivity to one another.\nLagan’s geo-spatial awareness is
also central to al-Iṣṭakhrī’s book and its regional map survey. Gl
impses of al-Iṣṭakhrī’s stark maps shimmer under the many layers of
Lagan’s paintings\, interwoven with modern themes and post-colonial per
spectives.\nFor Lagan\, these loaded landscapes offer interregional routew
ays\, defined less by controlled frontiers than by the natural historic fl
ow of human travel through a borderless world.\n\n\n\n
