This body of work includes the artist’s 35 mm photography, Super 8 film moving image, and her poetry and spoken word performance, depicting Letizia Lopreiato’s participative observation based social documentary, covering the life-changing series of events that occurred over the past three years in the life of one of the artist’s dearest friends from Dublin, Sonia McGuirk. She is a single mother who, with her two kids, relocated from the city of Dublin to the native forests of County Clare in the West of Ireland, via the Copper Coast in County Waterford – Ireland South East. This journey unfolds as both a personal and a physical quest of the protagonist and in many ways, of the artists as well, looking for a more sustainable and connected lifestyle.
“The Journey of Sonia’s Trees” will kick off at Phoenix Art Space Project Space on April 29th 2022 during a pricate view event and then it will be open to the public from April 30th and until May 1st.
“The Journey of Sonia’s Trees” is Letizia Lopreiato’s newly designed social documentaries’ series, which Sonia’s Trees (2018-2021), represents the pilot project and starting point of.
“The Journey of Sonia’s Trees” artivism awareness campaign on eco-sustainability, is expanding from the creation and exhibition of the artworks into a performative form of art practice for the artist, including artist talks, free native seeds art-packs give away initiatives and an artistsbook publication exhibited at an international level, to create an open dialogue platform on the topic of artivism in support of eco-sustainability.
The artist is this way carrying out different types of community engagement activities, all aimed at serving as the catalyst not only of a change in the conversation in regards to reforestation and eco-sustainability, but also aimed at promoting pluriverse social inclusion, through the set up of the show itself, as well as through the design of the different community based actions, which together give shape to the imagery of “The Journey of Sonia’s Trees” and its multi-layered, multifaceted meanings.

As Letizia Lopreiato shared, both her artistic as well as her personal development, have been evolving thanks to these series of social documentaries, in the constant flow of interaction, healing and growth that lays in the connection between human and nature, between the self and the collective, and their interconnection with the natural elements, outside of any boundary, together as one.
