Standing By is the first part of a body of works giving a rare insight behind the curtain as performers prepare to go on stage. By witnessing the solitude that performers experience when given their final call, the artist Miriam Hurley wanted to record and portray their nervous energy, hidden vulnerability and sense of trepidation.

In this series of 10 prints, Miriam captures the performers focus, internal fear and vulnerability. She portrays the hidden moments when performers become detached, alone and helpless in the moments before they emerge from the wings and transform into their stage character.

She recorded this series over many years to create this first body of works. Her original images were captured on black and white film and re worked in traditional printmaking techniques to enhance the quality of tone and surface texture to make fine art prints.

Biography:

Miriam completed courses in screen-printing and photopolymer printmaking before becoming an Open Access Member at Cork Printmakers. In 2016 she became a Full Member.

Miriam works with her own photographic images taken from a large range of subjects, in colour and black & white. She develops her photographic imagery through photopolymer printmaking on toyobo print plates, riston film on zinc and wood plates and screen-printing.

“After being introduced to printmaking with Cork Printmakers I have discovered another passion equal to my passion for photography. Printmaking allows me to creatively explore the countless range of print techniques available for my photographic images. Combining my photographic images with these print techniques has fulfilled my vision for my photographic images in a way that I had been searching for.” – Miriam Hurley
