DESCRIPTION:In each Famous Paintings and their Hidden Histories lecture\, A
 rtist and art teacher Áine Andrews will focus on a particular painting to
  recount its history. \n\nWeek 1: Portrait of Hugh Lane\, John Singer Sar
 gent\, 1906\n\nHugh Lane was born in Cork in 1875\, but he was never to sp
 end time there again\, until\, with tragic irony\, he died when the Lusita
 nia was torpedoed by a German U boat in 1915 within sight of the Cork coas
 tline.\n\nLane is perhaps best known as Lady Gregory’s nephew and partic
 ularly for an unsigned codicil to his will which led to the controversy re
 garding Ireland’s right to the important Impressionist paintings previou
 sly owned by him. Little however is generally known of the collector’s l
 ife in London and his extraordinary successful career as a dealer of old m
 aster paintings as well as modern works of art.
