The Sea Around Us is an ambitious, large-scale group exhibition that explores our complex relationship with the ocean through installation, film, participation and sound. John Akomfrah’s epic 2015 film Vertigo Sea and Forensic Oceanography’s Liquid Violence (2017) bookend a conversation on humankind’s interactions with the sea; while Susanne M. Winterling’s planetary opera in three acts, divided by the currents (2018) creates a sensual, immersive and intimate moment to explore the relationship between marine ecology, climate change, and the Capitolocene through an ecological worldview.
The show is accompanied by a new music performance and sound installation by composer and sound artist Karen Power, and a specially commissioned essay by artist Rosie O’Reilly (IE).
6 pm, Sligo Global Kitchen present a special seafood buffet.
7 pm, Gallery tours – join our curatorial team for an introduction to the exhibition.
8 pm, Composer and sound artist Karen Power is joined by Soprano Michelle O’Rourke for the opening performance.
This exhibition is sponsored by Hazelwood House, Sligo, with additional support from Goethe Institut Irland, Ecclesiastical Insurance, and the Arts Council Music Project Award.
