‘Thermolysis’ – an Exhibition by Girts Balodis Girts Balodis uses unconventional materials in his paintings – earth, clay, oxidised iron and found materials. This new series of work is an experiment to combine his already existing mixed media technique with the new-found materials- plastic waste, that he has collected on shores of our coastline. Thermolysis is a breakdown of molecules by the action of heat. By heating these found plastic waste objects to 600º C degrees Balodis transforms them into different shapes but can’t destroy completely. With opaque layers of glazes, texture and obscure shapes and found materials symbolically used he delivers the conceptual meaning of the painting. Map
