Oonagh Young Gallery is pleased to present a new body of drawings by Brian Fay that directly references works by Cimabue, Mary Shelley and Willem de Kooning and considers how they have been interpreted through acts of restoration, adaptation and erasure. This work focuses on aspects of the body in terms of imagery presented and manual interactions that have taken place to the original source material. These include interventions and adaptations by conservator Umberto Baldini, film directors James Whale and Rowland V. Lee, and Robert Rauschenberg. The nature of these actions vary from additive, subtractive, hidden, visible or reimagined, and each is contingent on its own time of recreation.
The exhibition takes its title from Mary Shelley’s introduction to the 1831 edition of Frankenstein, which was itself an adaptation of her own earlier 1818 version. In this introduction she discusses the competing dynamics between creation and recreation.
Brian Fay lives and works in Dublin. Working mainly through drawing he uses the materiality of pre-existing artworks and objects to examine their complex relationship to time. Recent solo shows include X (IR),(2016) nag Gallery, Dublin, Of the Survival of Images (and Objects) (2014) also nag Gallery and Broken Images or When does Posterity Begin? (2011),
His work is in the National Drawing Collection Ireland, and the collections of The Crawford Art Gallery, DIT, Office of Public Works and numerous private collections. He is the winner of the 2014 Derwent International Drawing Prize, the AXA Drawing Prize 2016 and is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the Dublin Institute of Technology. He has recently been invited on to the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation Residency Programme, New York.
