Unfolding the Map: A solo exhibition by Roisin McGuigan Cork County Arts Office is delighted to present Unfolding the Map a new solo exhibition by Cork based artist Roisín McGuigan in LHQ Gallery, County Library. The opening will take place at 6pm on Thursday 23rd June 2022 all are welcome.
Originally from Northern Ireland, Roisín McGuigan lives and works in Dublin. She is a graduate of National College of Art & Design, Dublin, Burren College of Art, and Turps Art School, London. Since 1996, McGuigan’s work has featured in museums and galleries at home and abroad including Cork European City of Culture at Crawford Gallery of Art, the Hun Gallery in New York, Emerge Art Fair in Washington DC, and the Rugby Art Gallery & Museum in the UK. Her work was also included in 30 Years, Artists, Places, a major touring exhibition of Irish Art 2015 –2017, and in Sense of Place in Matera, Italy, during European City of Culture, 2019. She has received bursaries and awards from Dublin City Council, Kerry County Council and The Arts Council of Ireland and her work is included in numerous national and international collections. Roisín McGuigan’s current practice is an auto-ethnographic reflection on place, responding to the reverberations of growing up near the Northern Irish border, a complicated and unruly place dominated by colonial legacies and conflict, which is explored through research, memory and anecdote, and realised through painting, sculpture and text. The work reflects recurring issues of place and identity, displacement, and living in areas of conflict, which continue to echo across the contemporary world. She seeks to understand the bond to place and the necessity, importance and complexity of that. She poses the questions “do we know our place from the ground or from the air? From books or from stories passed down? From assumptions or misinterpretations? Or do we really just need to make our own map?” For this exhibition she presents a selection of paintings created between 2019 and 2022 that consider the iconography of maps and flags – recurring motifs for anyone, anywhere, engaging with concepts of identity and nationhood. Unfolding the Map runs until Friday 29th July 2022. The gallery is open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5.30pm. Any enquiries should be emailed to arts@corkcoco.ie
