Virtual Studio Visit with Atsushi Kaga recipient of the Tony O’Malley Residency 2019 / 2020

Date(s) - 01/05/2020 - 31/07/2020

Artist Atsushi Kaga has invited the RHA Friends and public for an exclusive virtual look at his work in progress in his studio, the Tony O’Malley residential studio in Callan which is administered by the RHA every year.  Represented by Mother’s Tankstation, Kaga will discuss his current body of work for an upcoming exhibition there (previously programmed to open in May).

Atsushi Kaga received His B.A. from NCAD in 2005. Kaga employs images that represent his own cultural background, namely Japanese comics. He combines it with art historical references and themes to create paintings, sculptures and animations. By illustrating little tales, he speaks of the mythologies of everyday life, revealing existential situations, human vulnerability and weakness. His work expresses a profound sense of alienation, solitude and humour.

Kaga has completed numerous residency programmes including ISCP, New York, Location One, New York, and IMMA. His work is in public and private collections including the Arts Council of Ireland and Pigozzi Collection. He is represented by Mother’s Tankstation Limited, Dublin, and Maho Kubota Gallery, Tokyo
