Éadaoin Glynn’s first solo exhibition, ‘when she dreamt in colour’ in On The Pig’s Back, Cork. Interested in female domestic history, the inspiration for this new body of work came from the remnants of vivid colours Glynn found in a visit to her Grandmother’s derelict childhood home in North Cork. Personal items such as her Grandmother’s childhood autograph book, recipes, census records, notes, sewing patterns and letters can be glimpsed under layers of paint in many of the paintings.
She paints intuitively, abstracting landscapes, building layers of oil and cold wax medium over several months. The process of adding layers and marks, then excavating, scraping and dissolving them, builds texture and depth, creating a history, echoing how land is laid down, compressed, weathered and eroded over time.
