The overarching theme for this year’s Get Together builds on our work looking at development of opportunities and interactions that are respectful to artists under the title of “We are all individuals… or are we?” One of the sessions will engage on the topic of different identities (for example: gender, racial, sexuality, nationality, disability) who may feel as if they are used or being catered for as a token gesture, or as a nod to a prevailing “initiative” to create the impression of social inclusiveness and diversity in order to deflect accusations of discrimination… in other words as a replaceable character used to tick a box.
We are looking to hear artist’s experience, discuss positive engagement, commissioning, involvement, and to hear artists’ expectations, experiences, and suggestions as to how these things can be changed so as to ensure a respect of individuals for themselves rather than as a “token gesture”
To this end, we are having an open call for artists who want to tell their story and offer some insight into how they feel things can be improved both in the cultural world and specifically in organisations, events and other forms of engagement. We will select some key ones to highlight during Get Together, and use them as a key element for one of the open discussions during the day. To put your name forward for consideration, please fill out the form below. Artists selected to be panel participants will be paid according to VAI’s payment policies.
