VAI Maurice WardDo you feel confident about handling and packaging your own art work?  Do you feel confident that the materials you use for packaging: protect your work sufficiently for handling and transport; don’t affect the material condition of the work and look presentable and professional?

When sending art works to venues for exhibition or in response to open calls most likely you’ll be packaging the work yourself and passing it on to a courier.  The condition of the packaged work, and how you as an artist have handled this task, may often form the first impression a curator or gallery manager has of you as a professional. Done well it allows your work to travel easily and protects your work from damage.

This session is an opportunity to gain insight into minimum standards of materials and approaches to handling and packaging your work for transport and storage purposes. The session is offered free of charge to VAI members by Maurice Ward who will talk you through best practice and offer short demonstrations of how to package art work. The session is open to individual artists; independent curators; gallery managers and anyone involved in artist-led gallery spaces or small festivals. Staff from Maurice Ward Art Handling will look at how you may handle and care for your work as an artist and will also talk about how you might consider conservation issues in your use of art materials and packaging.
