The Minister for Communities is seeking to appoint a new Chairperson to the Board of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the arts, understands the benefits they bring for the individual and the wider community, who is willing to undertake the responsibilities of a Chairperson and wants to help shape the future of the arts in Northern Ireland.

The Chairperson will be instrumental in helping the Arts Council NI achieve its mission of placing the arts at the heart of our social, economic and creative life through working in partnership with hundreds of artists, arts organisations and venues, from literature through to arts in the community.

Skills and experience
Applications are welcome from a wide range of people who have an interest in public service, including those with suitable experience gained in the community, voluntary, business or public sectors. The individual appointed will receive training and a relevant induction programme. We are operating a Guaranteed Interview Scheme for candidates with a disability.

Essential Criteria
Applicants for the Chairperson position must be able to demonstrate a number of competences: experience of promoting/developing good corporate governance and risk management, and an understanding of public accountability; effective communication and interpersonal skills; experience of successfully leading an organisation or sectoral group; experience of promoting equality and social inclusion; strategic planning skills, as well as developing successful strategies and plans; and, an informed interest in the Arts. It is also desirable for candidates to have suitable board level experience.

Appointment details
• The appointment is for a term of up to 4 years from 1 December 2016.
• The time commitment for the Chairperson post is at least 40 days per year. In addition, the Chairperson will be expected to ensure the visibility of the Council by attending arts events on a regular basis. It attracts remuneration of £10,000 per annum. Travel and subsistence allowances are also payable.
