Dublin City Council are seeking to appoint an Exhibition Researcher for a temporary Archival Project – 16 Week Service Contract – with Dublin City Archives.

The archives of Jacob’s Fruitfield Ltd were received on permanent loan by Dublin City Archives in 2012. Jacob’s Biscuit Factory was founded in 1851 in Waterford, and shortly afterwards moved to Peter’s Row in Dublin, and later to premises in Bishop Street and finally to Tallaght. The company firmly established itself as a recognisable brand, which is still part of the fabric of Irish Society and which has had a noted impact on the social and economic life of Dublin over the past century. The archives of Jacob’s Fruitfield Ltd constitute an important collection relating to the history of Dublin and include materials relating to the 1913 Lockout, to the First World War and to the 1916 Rising, and War of Independence.

In 2012-13 Dublin City Council undertook a nine-month project to carry out partial initial box listing and preservation management work on the collection. In 2015, a further 30 week service contract was issued to complete cataloguing work, and a MS Access database with file level listing was created, and collection opened to public access. A 6 Panel travelling exhibition ‘W& R Jacobs Biscuit Factory and the 1916 Rising’ was developed in 2016.

As part of its Decade of Commemoration programme Dublin City Council now proposes to issue a 16 week contract for an exhibition researcher to assist the senior archivist and the exhibition designer in the development and delivery of a major exhibition focusing on Jacobs Biscuit Factory and its impact on twentieth century Dublin. Exhibition working title is “ Jacob’s Biscuits: from Revolution to Globalisation”.

Dublin City Council is now seeking quotations for this work from professionally-qualified selfemployed archivists, librarians or cultural heritage managers OR from companies which provide exhibition management services through professionally-qualified individuals. (The word candidate as used in this tender document refers equally to self-employed individuals and to companies).

Duration of the Exhibition Curation Research Project will be 16 weeks, based on a standard 35-hour working week [excluding lunch-breaks and tea-breaks.] Commencement dates for the project will be by arrangement between Dublin City Archives and the successful candidate. Hours of attendance can also be agreed between Dublin City Archives and the successful candidate. The contract must be completed before 25 August 2017.

The estimated value of this contract is Euro 12,000 exclusive of VAT. This is equivalent to Euro 39,000 per annum, pro rata.
