Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year is open for entries. Artists selected to take part in the heats have four hours to paint either a celebrity sitter within the UK. The Portrait competition heats will be filmed at the Battersea Arts Centre in London in April.
Unlike the competition format TV series that many are familiar with, they do not cast for characters – choosing instead to have a panel of judges select participants based on the quality of their submission painting. The programme’s success depends on the standard of the art produced, so from the outset it is a genuine celebration of good art and an intelligent, fascinating examination of the artistic process.
Regardless of whether or not they win the prize of a £10,000 commission, due to the encouraging and uplifting tone of the series artists who participate comment, without fail, that their experience of taking part was not only positive for their career in terms of the exposure, but also thoroughly enjoyable and surprisingly useful for their evolution as an artist.
