Dutch 17th-century genre paintings, often referred to as scenes of everyday life, encompass an enormous range of subject matter and have enjoyed tremendous popularity. Unassuming yet full of charm, these pictures, produced by great artists like Vermeer, Steen, de Hooch, Dou, and others, evoking daily existence during the Netherlands’ Golden Age, are legendary.
Brian Smyth’s 3-day intensive workshop introduces you to the oil painting practices of the Dutch Masters, selecting from a variety of genre paintings to copy. A resident artist and instructor at realist painting academies in Florence, Italy, Brian also regularly teaches at the Dutch Atelier of Realist Art in Haarlem, The Netherlands, giving him a strong affinity with this style and epoch.
Copying master paintings is one of the best ways to improve one’s painting skills, whether you are an established artist or a beginner. This intensive workshop starts with learning the principles of academic oil painting, and covers topics such as gesture, proportion and the use of subtle colour.
