Visual Artists Ireland in Partnership  with Wexford Arts Office is hosting  a one day webinar on Per Cent for Art and opportunities for emerging and established artists.

Workshop description:

This  workshop on   Per Cent For Art in Ireland will address current opportunities for emerging and established artists. Maeve will discuss what is needed in a proposal and application to a Per Cent for Art commission, followed by the production, delivery, evaluation and promotion of a finished project. This workshop will present information but will be discursive in nature, allowing for artists to ask questions in relation to their own practices. In preparation for this workshop, participants are asked to look at  The Per Cent for Art scheme is a government initiative, whereby 1% of the cost of any publicly funded capital, infrastructural and building development can be allocated to the commissioning of a work of art. Since 1997 this scheme has been made available to all capital projects across all government departments and it encompasses all artforms.

Maeve Mulrennan is the Assistant Arts Officer for Cork County Council. She has produced public art projects, sat on adjudication panels for local authority Per Cent for Art Projects and developed briefs and contracts for commissioning institutions.  Most recently she worked with Gaelscoil Chaladh an Treoigh, Luimneach, on a public art project with artist Diane McCormick. She previously worked with Dublin City Council Culture Company, Galway Arts Centre, Cúirt International Festival of Literature, Engage Art Studios, EVA’s ‘Better Words’ schools project and with Creative Schools.  She holds an MA is Visual Arts Practices from IADT Dun Laoghaire, h.Dip in Arts Administration from NUIG, BA (hons) Fine Art Painting from Limerick School of Art and Design and a BA (hons) in English Literature, Sociology & Politics from NUI Galway. She serves on the Board of Directors for Galway Community Circus.

Wexford County Arts Officer Liz Burns will give an introduction to recent Per Cent for Art opportunities in Wexford County  Council.  This will be followed by  artists Maria McKinney and Ciara Roche, who will each present on Per Cent  for Art Commissions they were awarded as part of  Wexford County Council’s  M11 Per Cent for Art Wexford Scheme 2018-21.

This will be followed by a conversation with Maeve Mulrennan on the opportunities and difficulties of Per Cent for Art and its relationship with artists’  studio practices.

Maria McKinney combines handcraft with response to context. Her practice reflects on the wider societal implications brought about by developments in agriculture and genetic research. She is winner of the Golden Fleece Award 2021 . Maria was awarded a Wexford County Council Per Cent Commission and her project titled ‘ Totem Yokes’ is ongoing since 2019 reflects on farming and involves a collaboration with farmers in north county Wexford. Her work has been exhibited Internationally, including at The Welcome Collection, London (four-person exhibition), The Museum of English Rural Life, Reading, UK, The RHA, Dublin, The RCC, Donegal, (solo), and at Pace University Gallery, NYC, USA, The Gregg Museum, North Carolina, USA, and Sunderland Museum, UK (group).

Ciara Roche  is a painter based in rural county Wexford. Ciara along  with artists Becks Butler and Astrid Newman  were awarded a  Wexford County Council Per Cent Per Art Commission for DisPatch which involved intense collaboration  with communities in Enniscorthy culminating  in the production of limited-edition post cards and a  pop-up post office in Enniscorthy over June bank holiday weekend in 2019 . In 2020 she won the Éigse Graduate prize with Carlow Arts Festival. She has been recipient of Arts Council Bursary, Creative Ireland and Artlink Awards.   Upcoming exhibitions include Ochre in Wexford Arts Centre, a solo show in Mothers Tankstation Gallery May/June 2021, HOME with the Glucksman, May 2021 and Peripheries MEET in Periphery Space Gorey, June 2021.
