Lavery / Osborne Symposium at The Hunt Museum, Limerick
Saturday 8 June, 10am to 3.30pm.
The careers of John Lavery (1856 – 1941) and Walter Osborne (1859 – 1903) present two striking studies of professional artistic life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Tracing the trajectories of their careers, this lecture will examine the social, political and cultural contexts in which they worked, looking, for example, at themes of education, travel, professional and exhibition networks. It will consider the artists against the changing political circumstances in Ireland, while also situating their work in relation to ongoing developments in European art, emphasising how artists from and in Ireland contributed to this international scene.
Speakers include: Dr Kathryn Milligan, Gearoid Arthur Hayes, Prof Kenneth McConkey and Róisín Kennedy.
