Description:

VAI DCCoIVisual Artists Ireland in partnership with the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland in conjunction with Brenda Tobin / LASA (Legal Advice Service for the Arts)

Open to visual artists and makers of fine craft, this is an opportunity for creatives to avail of short 20min drop-in legal clinics where one-to-one advice can be offered on a specific matter.  Matters might include: a letter that you need to write or reply to, drafting of a contract clause or more general advice on a particular problem such as how to propose a fee for your work.  LASA (Legal Advice Service for the Arts) clinics were established by Brenda Tobin as a way to offer artists and creatives the legal advice on their work that they would normally be unable to afford.  N.B. Places will be offered on a first come first served basis with time slots allocated on that basis also.

Brenda Tobin is a Freelance Solicitor with particular expertise in copyright and intellectual property work. She worked for nine years in RTÉ as part of their in-house legal team, dealing with all aspects of copyright and acquisition and distribution of content. Her final position there was lawyer with RTÉ Digital. Previously, roles included Production Lawyer dealing with rights in RTÉ Television and working in the central legal department, which involved, among other duties, content clearance advice. Before joining the Irish national broadcaster, she set up and ran a copyright unit at Thompsons’ Solicitors in London, where she represented the NUJ, sat on the NUJ Copyright Committee and was involved in High Court Litigation.
Brenda has also worked as a producer of content and has made several radio documentaries for RTE radio and has had her photographs published in national UK newspapers, magazines and books.
