Let’s face it – head on | Drawing Workshop with Pauline O’Connell at Butler Gallery

A hands-on workshop exploring portraits with artist Pauline O’Connell in response to Spitting Image, exhibition by Eva O’Leary

Portraits act as portals into the lives of the sitter. They reveal a relationship between the artist and the subject. A conversation unfolds when we view them, traversing time.

Taking historic portraits as a genre in painting that represented status, most often these depicted the wealthy who commissioned them (such as those housed in Kilkenny Castle) as a starting point: this workshop will take you through the politics of the gaze found in traditional portrait painting through to contemporary portrait photography in the Butler Gallery.

But, in today’s era of global culture – where social media bombards us with portraits – what do these say to, and about us? We will explore these questions drawing on Eva O’Leary’s photographic portraits in The Butler Gallery: by playfully exploring the elements of set up and performance, taking a hands-on approach through drawing and photography, we will use mirrors to look at the fragmented self – to depict the many ‘hats we wear’.
