Lodestar School of Art Hybrid Residency/Studio Intensive in Painting

Now accepting applications for Lodestar | Ireland 2019, a 10-day hybrid residency/studio intensive in painting and drawing led by internationally renowned artists and critics from Europe and the US, held in the historic Glenstal Abbey, Ireland. Founded by painter Denis Farrell as an alternative to traditional academic pressures, Lodestar is a place where willingness to fail is a triumph. The focus is on making, discussion and reflection combined with critique and studio visits. The idea for Lodestar came out of a necessity to advance painting as an important, relevant and evolving art form. Lodestar allows for any kind of painting, however is not for the those whose ambitions stop short of pushing past one’s natural facility. It is for painters who need to drive the work beyond the vanity of self-praise—and what they know. Lodestar welcomes artists who are willing to take the creative risks necessary to develop; who seek critical input on a body of work/portfolio for application to graduate courses; and those seeking rigorous exchange in studio work and critical thinking.

Lodestar gathers a coterie of likeminded people willing to work very hard—in the spirit of generosity. Painters, art critics, writers, makers and thinkers whose own work and practice are progressions of painting as an art form include Glenn Goldberg, Chuck Webster, Judy Glantzman, Sharon Horvath, Alice Maher, John Yau, and Denis Farrell, among other invited guests. The ratio of participants to guest artist is approximately three to one.

Fee covers tuition, guest talks, demonstrations, critiques, private room, all meals, excursions, and opening/closing dinner, and showcase of works-in-progress.
