Join curators Max Andrews, Mariana Cánepa Luna, (Latitudes, Barcelona) and Gareth Bell-Jones (Flat Time House, London) as they discuss some of their recent exhibition projects and recall some of the travels and experiences that form part of their work and profession.
In 2005 Max Andrews and Mariana Cánepa Luna founded Latitudes, a curatorial office based in Barcelona, Spain, that works internationally within the field of contemporary art.
Informed by an initial focus on ecology, Latitudes is especially interested in site, process and context. Latitudes has developed self-generated research-based projects in parallel with those produced at the invitation of museums, galleries and foundations, publishers, and academic contexts. Exhibitions have formed an important but irregular part of Latitudes’s practice. Other projects have deliberately taken a transdisciplinary approach to visibility and publicness while maintaining a broader bandwidth of working and thinking with art and artists.
About Flat Time House:
Flat Time House (FTHo) was the studio home of John Latham (1921-2006), recognised as one of the most significant and influential British post-war artists. In 2003, Latham declared the house a living sculpture, naming it FTHo after his theory of time, ‘Flat Time’. Until his death, Latham opened his door to anyone interested in thinking about art. It is in this spirit that Flat Time House opened in 2008 as a gallery with a programme of exhibitions and events exploring the artist’s practice, his theoretical ideas and their continued relevance. It also provides a centre for alternative learning, which includes the John Latham archive, and an artist’s residency space.
About Askeaton Contemporary Arts:
Since 2006, Askeaton Contemporary Arts commission, produce and exhibit contemporary art in the locale of a small town in County Limerick, Ireland. An annual residency programme entitled Welcome to the Neighbourhood situates Irish and international artists in the midst of Askeaton each summer, while thematic exhibitions, publications and events often occur. Through these methods, over one hundred artists projects have been realised.
With no ‘white-cube’ gallery spaces in Askeaton, artists work in public spaces throughout the town. This form of engagement focuses on the existing dynamics of the locale, intending to bring forward the diverse layers of daily life and create a rich framework for subjective encounters. A local audience are often actively implicated into the development of projects through their assistance or participation. Such an approach is built on a belief that contemporary art can be used as an active hub for local society, as a form of critique, investigation and celebration where artists are at the center of these dialogues playing a primary and fundamental role.
