Mould Making and Casting Course, LIT

The aim of this programme is to introduce participants to a wide variety of moulding and casting techniques. Each participant will gain an appreciation and understanding of the fundamental elements involved in mould making. Participants will gain experience in the use of various moulding materials and processes and develop proficiencies in creating multiples of an object. Handouts will be distributed at the beginning of each class, containing diagrams and materials information, followed by a discussion outlining procedures and technique. Participants will gain experience in the use of silicone, alginate, wax and plaster casting. Casting strategies and contemporary art practice will be explored to realise a piece to be cast in plaster, wax, jesmonite and resin. Sprewing of objects for lost wax process in preparation for bronze casting will be introduced. Participants will have the option to cast their finished piece in bronze, incurring extra cost, at a fine art foundry.

Entry Requirements
There are no formal academic entry requirements. This programme is suitable for anyone wishing to learn technical aspects of moulding and casting combined with exploring unconventional applications in creative projects. No previous experience necessary however the program is also suitable for experienced practitioners who wish to develop proficiencies. Materials will be provided.

There will be no formal examination. A group discussion and feedback on work in progress and final piece presentation will be timetabled. Each participant will create a mould in silicon, alginate and plaster. A cast will be produced in wax, jesmonite and plaster.

An LIT certificate of completion will be issued.
