The trustees of the Golden Fleece Award are delighted to announce the shortlist of artists qualifying for 2018 award. Those shortlisted are Magda Bethani (ceramicist), Ursula Burke (sculptor), Damien Flood (painter), Paul Hallahan (painter), Cecilia Moore (metalworker) and Natasha Rollinson (jeweller). The award will be announced at a ceremony at the RHA on 15th March 2018. The prize fund for 2018 is €30,000, making the Golden Fleece Award the most generous art prize in Ireland.
For the 2018 award, a total of 139 artists to applied for consideration, a record in the 17-year history of the award. Artists were asked to submit images of their work along with a statement outlining how they would utilise the award. Participating artists’ ambitions varied from preparing for future exhibitions, to developing their practice, acquiring new tools and studio materials.
The award was established as a charitable bequest by the late Helen Lillias Mitchell. The Golden Fleece Award is governed by a board of trustees which includes members of Lillias Mitchell’s family, professional fund managers and arts professionals who work closely together to fulfill her wishes. They are supported by a distinguished advisory panel whose knowledge and experience are invaluable in guiding the development of the award. This includes Patrick T. Murphy, Director of the Royal Hibernian Academy (chairperson), jewelry designer and NCAD academic Angela O’Kelly, graphic artist Robert Russell, painter Eoin Mac Lochlainn and Dara O’Leary, Manager of the RDS Art Programme.
