The Do’s and Don’ts of a Studio Visit with Marco Antonini (NI)

Making the most out of a studio visit can send a lot of us into a state of terror. Sometimes we can overthink what is about to happen, and find ourselves thinking of things that might have gone better when they have left the studio.

We have asked Marco to give us the benefit of his experience in what makes for a good studio visit. Although based in Zurich, Marco has been a part of VAI’s programme of curator visits during his time working with NutureArt in New York. We have asked him to give us his top tips…  which can be then used as an aid when panic sets in at the prospect of the curator arriving at the door.

Marco Antonini is a Zurich -based independent writer and curator active since 2001.
On January 2017 he was appointed Program Specialist (with a focus on Contemporary Performance and Visual Arts) at the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage in Philadelphia. From 2011 to 2016 he served as NURTUREart’s Executive Director & Curator, presenting work by (in loosely chronological order and among many others as in all following lists) Ian Pedigo, Ivan Argote, Jonathan Ehrenberg, Meredith James, Arianna Carossa, Daniel Bejar, Marysia Gacek, Nathalie Hausler, Nanna Debois-Buhl and Liz Linden, Jessica Segall, Brad Troemel, Gabriele Picco, Nobutaka Aozaki, Conor Backman, Patrick Meagher, Matthew Cowan, Alina Tenser, Vibha Galhotra, Nicholas Keogh, Jan Pfeiffer, Irgin Sena, Sascha Pohflepp, Seher Shah, Nadim Abbas, Elastic City, Gabriela Salazar, Davide Zucco, Nikola Uzunovski, Andrea Nacciarriti, Keren Benbenisty, Deville Cohen, Lior Modan, Steffani Jemison, Itziar Barrio and Adelita Husni-Bey. Antonini’s ambitious, inter-generational group exhibitions We Are: (2011)…Is This Free? (2012)Welcome to the Real (2013), We Are: at The Luminary (Saint Louis, MO, 2013) and Multiplicity: City as Subject Matter (2014) further pushed the envelope of what was possible at NURTUREart, connecting established and emerging artists, experimenting with off-site programming and developing books and publications that helped NURTUREart reach out to an increasingly international audience.

His independent curatorial projects have been presented in New York by Japan Society, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC), ISE Foundation, Elizabeth Foundation Project Space, the Italian Cultural Institute, the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP), Interstate Projects, and Abrons Art Center; Internationally by Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, Venice, MuLab Citta` S.Angelo, Pianissimo, Milan, West Germany, Berlin, FUTURA Center for Contemporary Art, Prague, CCEG, Guatemala City, Random Institute, Zurich  among many others.
