Open Call | Crofters’ Memorial, Staffin, Isle of Skye, Scotland

Deadline: 28 February

ATLAS Arts, working in partnership with Staffin Community Trust (Urras An Taobh Sear), invites applications from artists interested in researching and developing a contemporary memorial to acknowledge the crofters’ troubles in Staffin, Isle of Skye, in the 1880s. We are seeking artists who will demonstrate imagination and sensitivity in challenging perceptions of what a contemporary memorial to a historical event can be.

The proposals will form a series of pilot commissions that contribute to an awareness and understanding in the local community of the potential positive impacts and benefits that a commissioned public artwork/contemporary memorial can have. This is a unique opportunity for artists – local, national and international, to engage in social practice and develop ideas for a context-specific artwork.

Stage 1 – submit application
In line with the requirements stated in the brief – please bear in mind that due to the nature of the project and its focus on social practice, collaboration and engaging with the community/place we do not expect finished proposals.

Your application should include:

  • A short statement outlining your interest in the commission including how you might approach community engagement
  • CV and a detailed portfolio of relevant past projects or links to work that illustrates your artistic practice/maximum of six images
  • Your availability through 2017
  • How you heard about the project

Due to the nature of the project and its focus on collaborations and engaging with the community/place we do not expect finished proposals.

It is anticipated that ATLAS Arts will contact selected applicants in late March 2017. Applicants will then be invited to an initial meeting in Skye, the costs of which will be covered.

Stage 2 – selected artists
It is anticipated that three artists will be selected. The artists will each receive £500 to work on their proposal in more detail. As part of this the artists will be expected to visit the Isle of Skye for an initial meeting.

Stage 3 – development
It is anticipated that these artists will then each be awarded £2000 to further develop the proposal. This commission explores social practice and it is expected this will include further time spent in the Isle of Skye, engaging with the Staffin community, the area and researching the history of the Crofters’ troubles.
