Fermanagh & Omagh District Council invite illustrators to submit expressions of interest to create a number of images for the forthcoming Fermanagh Folktales publication.
The Irish Folklore Commission was an island-wide initiative which took place from c.1950 – 1971 with the purpose of collecting the very many tales and stories which only existed orally and were at danger of being lost unless otherwise documented. The archive was managed by University College Dublin (UCD). Fermanagh is one of the very few counties whose collected works has never been published. Stories were told and collected in both English and Irish at the time. The stories are from and for adults; they are not children’s ‘fairy stories’.
This project aims to research, collate and reimagine some of the stories that were collected as part of the Commission. The project will result in the publishing of a unique book containing a number of folktales from Fermanagh and illustrations. The book is being researched, written and reimaged by local writers, Séamas Mac Annáidh and Carlo Gébler. Both will be Writers-in-Residence at Enniskillen Castle for the duration of this project.
They require one illustration per story, plus an illustration for the front cover. All illustrations should be black and white, with the exception of the front cover which should be fully colourised. Each illustration will reflect themes within stories, which will be advised. There will be an official public launch of the publication and storytelling as part of EHOD and Culture Night. The themes of each illustration will reflect themes within stories which will be advised by the writers. The timeline for completion of this project is two months.
