This workshop will explore both direct plein air oil painting as well as the process of abstraction. Participants will work in the mornings in a traditional plein air approach – outdoors, developing tonal relationships in response to the extraordinary landscape, in search of a convincing sense of space, light and weather, as well as learning different ways of handling and applying paint. In the afternoons we will work indoors on one good sized canvas for the duration of the workshop, using our morning paintings as source material in a process of ongoing and improvisational discovery through abstraction.
In addition to the hands-on work, there will be supplemental readings and lively conversation, engaging with the related topics of painting and creativity. Risk and play will be encouraged! Individual attention will be given in a supportive and genuine atmosphere.
