Palimpsest | Emma-Lucy O’Brien and Maree Hensey in Conversation at VISUAL, Carlow

Tuesday 26 June, 7pm

Emma-Lucy O’Brien Curator at VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art, Carlow will discuss the exhibition, Palimpsest with artist Maree Hensey.

Maree’s work explores memory, loss, the unknown, subliminal and haunting relics of past and present lives. She uses materials that are rich in associations and investigates ways to transform them, projecting new identities and layers of meaning onto materials in doing so. The work is curatorial in that it assembles, preserves and documents. The process is an archaeological investigation, uncovering something to make a different sense of it. For the viewer she has no overarching authorial narrative and she does not want to provide resolutions but simply offer the viewer a complex palimpsest of ideas.

The exhibition is an opportunity to rediscover certain aspects of the artist’s works in the context of the museum’s collections but also to unveil new work created specially for the occasion.
