Artist Brief: GCAT_Artist Brief June2019.pdf
This brief invites proposals for an artwork that responds to the ethos of the school and its members, its community and context. While artist led, the commission will
be project based and develop from a collaboration with pupils, beginning with an exploration of biodiversity and the environment, themes that are central to the ethos of our
school. Materials used will reflect the school’s awareness of the environment in their sustainability. The proposed commission is to acquire a permanent, visual artwork for the school that reflects the character and ethos of our school. The aim of this commission is:
• To enhance the school environment for pupils, staff and the local community
• To meaningfully engage some of our students during the process of creating this Artwork
Art forms & Methodology
The artwork may be two or three dimensional and may consist of a single piece of art or multiple pieces. It is hoped that the final work will be permanent, durable and easily maintained over time. It is also hoped that the legacy of the artwork is that future pupils can contribute to the work over time. The proposed process must involve artists making new work as a central aspect of the commission and will engage our students. The Artwork should be created in response to a suitable indoor site on the school’s campus. We have not designated the site – we feel that it is important to allow the Artist the scope to respond to the whole school environment (photos attached in brief).
The selection process will take the form of a Two Stage Open Competition. It is open to all interested professional visual artists at any stage of their career or experience. Selection will be based on the information supplied, establishing the competence of the artist to carry out the commission.
The Selection Panel will consist of a representative from the School Board of Management, the Project Manager, the School Principal, parent representative and an independent artist.
