Phase 2 Open Call | Belshaw’s Quarry Sculpture Park, Belfast

Application deadline: 11 June, midnight

Whitemountain + District Community Association (WDCA) has launched a second phase to a unique geologically themed sculpture park project at Belshaw’s Quarry National Nature Reserve located on Benson’s Rd, Lisburn, Co.Antrim, BT28 3UU.

Phase two will focus on the human aspects of the quarrying of limestone, the materials, the flora that grew in the disused quarry and the theme of townlands. Each sculpture is envisaged being a little larger than the size of a person. The budget per sculpture on average is anticipated to be £10,000 to 12,000 each.

The approximately 3 hectares in area disused former Limestone Quarry site is open 24/7 to the public and is owned by Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA). The site is classed as an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) due to the number of publically accessible geological features spanning over 200 million years of Earth’s history. The sculptures will act as a unique way to connect art and geologically influenced matter.

To receive a full briefing pack, please email and then advise your expression of interest before midnight 11 June including some brief details of your past work in open public spaces. A site visit will be held on 21 June.

Deadlines per sculpture will be commensurate with the overall project schedule but contract awards may be as early as late September 2017 so that installation can be in late March 2018.
