One of LP’s most enduringly popular courses, photo etching allows participants to reproduce photographic imagery as a print. This technique can enrich the work of artists, printmakers, film students, photographers and anyone with an interest in these fields. Such a course would also suit those who would like to make a creative project using family or historical photographs.
The process involves a photo-sensitive film being applied to a metal plate. The desired image is exposed from a transparency using a UV light. After developing, the plate is ready to print and in time, to combine with various other effects and techniques.
This is a really exciting method to explore as the results are photo realistic with high levels of detail.
Any type of image can be use whether it is hand drawn or photographic. Inking, wiping and printing multiple copies as well as registration and paper types will also be covered during the course and no previous printmaking experience is necessary.
Suzannah O’ Reilly is an accomplished artist and printmaker who has exhibited broadly both nationally and internationally. She is highly experienced as a tutor and sits on the board of directors in Limerick Printmakers.
