This 2 Day Plein Air workshop with Sky Landscape Artist of the Year Winner (2016) Richard Allen is a wonderful opportunity to experience Powerscourt Gardens and Waterfall – considered by National Geographic magazine to be the third best garden in the world.
Richard sets a lot of store by planning in his own work – surveying the location, finding interesting compositions and doing preliminary sketching. The interesting (or maddening) aspect of plein air is marrying the planning and intentionality to the shifting conditions that unfold and the constant adjustments that must be made.
The responsive and improvisational nature of the process is what can make or break a picture. Richard would hope that participants will leave the workshop with a greater understanding of the component parts of painting landscape and how to reconcile the more formal with the spontaneous. Practically, he would anticipate participants completing a number of formal studies that discretely examine elements such as tone and colour so that they could go on and make an attempt at an extended piece.
If the weather proves not to be conducive to this plein air experience, accommodations have been made and Richard will appropriately adapt his teaching to suit. In his fall-back studio option he envisages doing a still life study which would be some form of miniature/analogous landscape.
