Department of Arts in Health and Community Practice

Art making within a social context often brings about transformation for the individuals and groups involved. Exploring the means to, and potential for, this transformation is a key concern of the Department of Arts in Health and Community Practice.

The Principles of Art Therapy Certificate is aimed at:
• Art practitioners interested in working in a health or community context.
• Professionals working in that context seeking to develop their own creative skills and incorporate them into their work.
• Individuals interested in exploring their creativity in a group context
• individuals who are considering training as an Art Therapist in the future or want to find out more about the art therapy process.

Maturity and life experience are always viewed as a valuable asset.

This course offers an introduction to the core principles of Art Therapy – boundaries, the image, self-inquiry, process and the triangular relationship. It aims to provide a deeper understanding of the art therapy process through experiential workshops, lectures and seminars. Journaling and essay writing challenge participants to develop the practice of reflecting on their experiential learning and relating it to theory.

This course runs once a month in two/three-day blocks from December 2016 to June 2017.
