VAI actively supports artists in their locality through a variety of means such as information and networking events, professional development training and appointed regional representatives. Artists living and working in rural and remote settings face a particular set of challenges. To address these VAI established the Local Groups programme in order to build networks and strengthen relationships among artists. VAI seeks out existing artists networks or informal gatherings and assists them to broaden their engagement with local artists. Where this is not possible we look at introducing artists to each other in an area with a view to setting up a network. An objective of this initiative is to help groups to become self sustaining by encouraging self-organisation with administrative and logistical support from VAI.
The programme includes: Networking Events, Professional Development, Clinics, Mentoring, Discussion Groups, Expert Presentations, and more recently our Show & Tell events. These are branded under the name Common Room Cafés to reflect the energy that is generated at each event.
This session will look at ways of connecting artists to one another and supporting them in their locality. Invited speakers including artists: Aideen Barry, Linda Shevlin, Christine O’Brien Shanahan, Lisa Fingleton and curator Hollie Kearns will talk about creating networks of local partners and stakeholders and experiences of working in rural settings. This will be followed by a discussion on approaches taken to developing collaborations, as well as mentoring and mobilizing artists in local communities.
