Come along and learn essential pottery techniques such as how to hand build a vessel, glaze it and learn the ancient art of Raku firing. Raku firing is an ancient Japanese ceramics technique that has been used for centuries. Traditional Raku pottery was used by the Zen Buddhist masters because of its natural simplicity. Traditionally the pieces are handmade rather than thrown.
In Raku firing pots are taken from the kiln while they are still red hot, and are then placed in a vessel with combustible material, such as sawdust or shredded paper, and covered. The magic of Raku lies in its speed and the unpredictability of the results.
The Raku firing will be the heart of our Culture night event so friends, family and neighbours are all welcome. Refreshments will be served.
