I live in a remote rugged area in the West Donegal Gaeltacht.
Born & brought up in Clonmany ,Inishowen Co. Donegal. I have lived on Arranmore Island and now live in Gortahork. Surrounded by the Derryveagh mountains and facing the wild Atlantic coast and Islands, this elemental landscape and its people are the primary inspiration for my work.
Apart from the years in the Crawford School of Art training as an Art Teacher, Donegal has always been my home and inspiration.
After a teaching career spanning 30 years I am now pursuing my dream of working as a full time Artist. During my time as an Art Teacher I continued to paint, develop & exhibit my work.
As an artist, what are the key challenges that you face on a daily basis?
Staying true to my own vision. Working in such an isolated area makes it difficult to interact with the Art World.
I have a very dated website which I would like to develop but lack the skills to do so
Lack of access to professional development opportunities.
What inspires you most about the county in which you live?
It is the unique character of the landscape and people of Donegal that inspire my work. Nestled in this elemental landscape are small communities of hill farmers, fishermen, musicians, visual artists, poets & dreamers. My work has a strong narrative element. I enjoy painting en Plein air and studio work. I use various media in response to the subject – Watercolour, Oil, Acrylic and also Fabric. I love the ever-changing light and textures of the landscape. I also paint portraits of people who inspire me. I like to paint people whom I have met and felt a connection to.
