This technique in printmaking is so new…. it doesn’t have a technique name yet. Working in Digital printmaking, Belfast Print Workshop printmaker Josephine McCormick invites you to make a print using sound vibration. Using a frequency generator to produce a sound which is then captured as a cymatic pattern onto card, you will then make a collagraph and print up using good quality printing inks and paper. You choose your own frequency to capture and colour to print it up with. Enjoy the experience and experiment with sound and printmaking and take home your very own cymatic print.
Just some information on what Cymatics actually is about…Cymatics is the study of sound and vibration made visible, typically on the surface of a plate or membrane like a drum. The word Cymatics; derives from the Greek ;kuma; meaning ;billow; or ;wave,to describe the periodic effects that sound and vibration has on matter. Cymatics reveals a strange and beautiful symmetry at work in nature. Some information on collagraphs…..A collagraph print is one made from a plate with different textures on it. You will make the collagraph with carborundum material for texture. The collaged plate can be sealed then with a quick drying household varnish – this makes it easier to wipe and more durable and seal the plate with varnish, ready to print.
