The MISSING Workshops at Johnstown Castle’s Festival of Honey, Wexford

Wexford County Council’s Arts Office in association with Johnstown Castle’s inaugural Festival of Honey invite you to The MISSING Workshops as part of Urgent Enquiry, Wexford.

Learn more about the solitary bee that makes its nest in empty snail shells, and engage in a fun family activity involving clay workshops to produce your own individual shell.

Osmia aurulenta is the only solitary bee in Ireland that makes its nest in empty snail shells. Over the last 30 years up to 30% of Irish insects have disappeared. In this workshop we will learn about the important role of insects on local biodiversity and the impact of climate change. Ceramic artist Mairead Stafford will give a practical demonstration on different ways of working with clay to produce a ‘shell’. Participants will be invited to produce a ceramic ‘snail shell’ that will be incorporated into a large-scale artwork that will highlight the devastating impact of climate change on our local biodiversity.

Wexford County Council along with Fingal County Council and Dublin City Council are engaged in a collaboration of artists’ residencies where artists were selected to look at climate change and its effects on local biodiversity with communities and specialists along the east coast. This event is a culmination of a 3 month residency in Wexford by artist Mark Clare. For further details visit:
