The Stephen’s Green Hibernian Club Portrait Competition 2017 invites artists to submit two drawings. One of Daniel O’Connell, founding member of the Stephen’s Green Club (1840 – 2005) and one of Sir Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington – Patron of The Hibernian United Service Club (1832 – 2005) – both clubs merged in 2005 and celebrate almost 185 years of friendship among like minded individuals.
The competition is open to artists working in 2D wall based visual art. The winning artist will be commissioned to complete two paintings, one of Daniel O’Connell and one of Sir Arthur Wellesley and these paintings will hang in The Stephen’s Green Hibernian Club’s permanent art collection. Final paintings must be 100cm x 100cm square.
The commissioned portraits must be completed by 28 September 2017. The portaits will reside in The Clubs Dining Room so members and guests can once again dine among their ancestors, as is club tradition.
Artists are invited to visit the Club and view the space where the finished works will be displayed on 14 March between 5 and 7pm or 21 March between 5 and 7pm.
Applications by email only. All emails must be marked for the attention of the Arts Competition Committee. Applications must include:
- Digital images of the 2 artworks (JPEG, max. 3M)

The Arts Committee Judging Panel reserve the right to separate the commission should they decided to choose two artists to paint one portrait apiece.
By entering the Competition, entrants agree to assign their intellectual property rights to the Stephen’s Green Hibernian Club and permit the Club to use the photos in any media, including online, for any purpose whatsoever. Entrants who do not agree to this use should not enter this Competition.
