Ursula Burke Wins VAI Suki Tea Art Prize 2018

Visual Artists Ireland and Suki Tea are delighted to announce Ursula Burke as the winner of this years Suki Tea Art Prize.

As winner of the Suki Tea Art Prize Ursula will have a two month, fully-funded, artist residency at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris, including flights, accommodation, studio space, a monthly stipend, and superb networking opportunities. The prize aims to provide artists with an opportunity to respond to a new environment and develop new work.

Ursula Burke is a Belfast based artist who works within the discipline of Sculpture. She uses a variety of media including porcelain sculpture, embroidery, drawing and photography. Much of her Fine Art practice deals with issues of Representation and Identity within contemporary Ireland, north and south of the border.

Ursula’s work deals with the social and psychic landscape following the peace process in Northern Ireland. Her solo exhibition Hope for a Better Past at the MAC, Belfast, 2013 explored the unique slippages and schisms through which competing identities in the region are reproduced. She is also interested in abuses of power in many realms of the social and political life. Formally her work appropriates Classical tropes and re-inserts them in the contemporary. In 2017, she made a body of porcelain sculptures responding to the Black Lives Matter campaign (The Precariat) and works exploring the perceived success or failure of political enterprise (Embroidery Frieze – The Politicians) at the Mattress Factory Museum, Pittsburgh. Earlier this year she was announced as one of the recipients of the Golden Fleece Award 2018.
